THE
CIRCLE - DESERT ISLAND HOLM OF PAPAY. 27 - 28 June
2009
Holm of Papay is a small uninhabited island, about 1000m long
and 400m wide, with well preserved Neolithic Cairns and home
of a very special Holmie Sheep
The Circles was produced in the island's Rammie Geo. This is
the first Circle which was performed under open sky without
any artificial light as nights at the Northern latitude in June
are short and relatively bright. 5 days camping on the island
we were extremely lucky with a weather - unusually sunny and
quiet. Just in the beginning the structure was lifted in the
air by the light breath, but was stabilised by rocks attached
to the bottom of the Circle.
Painting started with bright blue and golden ochre and through
night moved to the darker shades of umber and dark brown. Graphically
it was affected by movement of sun, rocks, two sheep skulls
and dry carcass of a little lamb washed on the shore of the
Geo.
Sound - the sea and sea birds and absolute silence in the middle
of the night.
