RAILWAY HOUSES : LONDON 2003

This year was busy with architectural work - i was building garden in Kensal Green, which i designed back in 1999, and fire place in Surrey together with Jonathan Bennett.

FROM 2003 ARTIST'S STATEMENT :

My paintings are a reflection on places and spaces. Most of my paintings originated from endless railway journeys through Central Asia, where for few days you can only see the slightly fluctuating line of horizon, and only quality of light and colour is subtly changing, and railway houses are the greatest visual sensation in the sensation of nothingness. Texture becomes the main visual event.

Drawing on the surface is an event-act-movement-dance. The choreography of it is very relevant to the context – it is a negotiation between surface and everything-what-is–going-on-in-front-of-it. Drawing is the way to test the resistance and durability of the surface through scarification. Drawing for me is a tool to feed my curiosity about material qualities of the surface – cut trough by the line, scratched by repetitive scribbles, stabbed and tattooed by dots.
